Well, I put my grownup pants on today and packaged up three paintings for an art show happening at the Penticton Art Gallery. I quickly realized that I have NO IDEA what I am doing. Like, I don't even know how to price a painting. What's it worth? Well, if I add up materials, I guess it comes to around $25, but that doesn't include time put in or the hours spent practicing or contemplating how to make it better, or the value that someone might place on it if they really, really like it.
I got pretty anxious about it. I asked my husband, who thinks that most art is worth about as much as the paper it's on plus ten dollars. I asked friends, I asked art professionals. I can easily assign a value to a piece of art that belongs to someone else, completely unaware of how much time and effort and supplies they actually put into it...but not my own. Why?
Here's a good TED Talk about how the mind of an artist works.
